Amitabha is one of the three saints from the western paradise together with Mahasthamaprapta and Guanyin/Avalokitesvara. The three saints are especially worshipped to save dead loved ones from hell and to give them access to the western paradise with the help of the three saints. Earthly existence is considered to be a transitional phase to this glorious hereafter. Padmasambhava, an Indian monk in the eighth century, brought the Amitabha worship to Tibet and Nepal.
