Guanyin is a Bodhisattva in East Asia, associated with compassion and mercy, and as such is worshipped by the Mahayanabuddhists. She is commonly known as the Goddess of Grace (in English Goddess of Mercy). The name Guanyin is an abbreviation of Guanshiyin, which means ‘[The one who] perceives the sounds of the whole world’. It is also referred to as Guanyin Bodhisattva. Some Buddhists believe that when one of them leaves the world it is placed by Guanyin in the middle of a lotus flower, and then transferred to the pure land of Sukhāvatī in the west.
