Dit prachtige en meest voorkomende Boeddhabeeld komt voor in Thaise tempels.
The most common Buddha statue in Thai temples is crossed with the legs, the left hand in the lap and the right hand touches the earth. This handmoedra is known as the “Earth Witness” moedra. According to tradition, after six years of meditation under a bodhi tree, Prince Siddharta had almost reached enlightenment. At that moment Mara, the demon of illusions, tried to stop Prince Siddharta from taking his last steps towards enlightenment. Siddharta meditated all night to overcome the fears and temptations that Mara presented to him. At that moment he made this hand gesture. Siddharta touched the ground and called on the Goddess of Earth to witness his transformation and give him the stability not to give in to Mara’s temptations. In response to his request, the Earth shook Goddess to the ground and the Mara demons fled for good. Thus, Prince Siddharta reached the Enlightenment and became ‘the Buddha’, the Full Awakening.
