The Process
The manufacturing of hammered singing bowls is a completely manual process. Each singing bowl is carefully hammered into the right shape, going through several stages of production to obtain the right shape and a pure tone. For this process, the various metals (copper, tin, iron, lead, gold and silver) are first melted in a furnace. The ratios depend on what the final product requires. Copper and tin together produce bronze and therefore make up the main ingredients, for the bronze bowls. For the Seven Metal bowls, small amounts of the other metals are also added. The molten metal is then removed from the furnace and poured into a mold. Once cooled, disks are cut from the alloy varying in diameter and thicknesses, which can then be further processed. After precise measurement and classification by weight, the discs are then hammered by hand into the desired shape and size. To do this, about five discs are first laid on top of each other and heated in the oven until red-hot. Once heated they are hammered one by one into bowl shape using a mold.
The expert craftsmen can only do this when the metal is extremely hot, because if it cools too much it becomes brittle and can develop cracks, rendering the bowl unusable. After the bowls have their rough shape, the fine process of finishing begins. At this stage, each bowl gets its own shape and size. Again a lot of fine hammering is involved, so the bowl must be heated once again to be able to produce exactly the right shape and sound. After this, the bowls are individually sanded and polished on the outside and inside, and if necessary chiseled for the finishing touch.
