In Eastern countries the tongue scraper has been an essential part of oral hygiene for centuries, yet in the West it is still almost unknown. It is for this reason that Spiru has deliberately included the tongue scraper in its range of products: because it is so difficult to obtain!
Our tongues surface contains deep pores and taste buds, with a very large surface in total. These pores harbor a great deal of bacteria and fine residue from what we eat and drink. Research shows that each epithelial cell in our tongue can house an average of about 100 bacteria. This is a very concentrated quantity of bacteria.
The tongue constantly forms a layer of dead cells, food residues and hundreds of thousands of bacteria, living and dead, as well as chemical substances such as sulfur that are emitted by these bacteria. If this layer is not removed regularly then it remains on the tongue continuing to thicken. This layer is one of the main causes of halitosis (bad breath). When we eat or drink certain strongly scented products this further negatively effects mouth odor. Additionally, the taste buds also become coated by this layer and function less well. Finally, many people often sleep with their mouths open, so when they get up, the tongue has a foul taste and is dry.
The daily use of a tongue cleaner, along with proper use of the toothbrush, is very effective for oral hygiene. It is very easy to do. After brushing, scrape gently – not too hard – over the entire surface of the tongue. Make sure you don’t begin too far back, because the part of the tongue where there are many large taste buds should not be scraped. You will see that you are scraping a large amount of waste from the tongue. Always rinse the scraper under the faucet, and repeat the process until there is no more muck coming off the tongue. It is recommended that this be done in the morning and evening; some people who have dry mouth or a foul taste in the mouth during the day may do it more often throughout the day. It turns out that with a lot of excessive stress, the tongue secretes more waste, so tongue scraping is also recommended more often in stressful periods.
The tongue cleaner we offer is made of copper, lasts a very long time and is easy to use. Grasp the ends of the cleaner firmly with both hands and pull the pre-curved cleaner along the tongue (with the middle part over the tongue). Rinse again and again under the running tap. Usually three scrapings are sufficient. Do not continue endlessly! Rinse the mouth well, possibly with a natural-based mouthwash.
Some people think that cleaning the tongue with the toothbrush is sufficient. Put it to the test yourself: brush first, and then see how much extra comes off when using the tongue cleaner.
