Symbolism of the Ritual Drum
In Buddhist philosophy, sound is considered a symbol of emptiness, shunyata. The shape of the damaru has its origins in ancient India – where one side of the drum represents the male energy, and the other the female creative energy. The two sides of the drum combined represent the merging of relative and ultimate Bodhicitta, the complete enlightenment spirit.
In the Tantric Buddhist Chod ritual, the drum instructs and reminds us of impermanence, while the sound invokes the female goddesses, the Dakinis. Another interpretation of the sound is that the drum represents the power of the rhythm of the heartbeat.
In Hinduism, especially by Shiva followers, the beating of a ritual drum by Shiva is believed to have produced the very first sound (nada) ewe. This first sound was made in the void of nothingness. Shiva then began his creation dance to the rhythm of the drum. From his dance, the whole world came into being.
