Turquoise

Gemstone Turquoise is blue, green, or teal. It has been a beloved gemstone around the world for centuries. The green-blue color is named after this stone. The name is often written and pronounced in French, which is why the stone is also known as turquoise. The stone has a spider web pattern: it often has brown or black veins. This is also the characteristic by which real turquoise can be recognized. In some cases, Turquoise has gold-colored inclusions. The stone is often found along with other copper-containing minerals, such as Chrysocolla, Malachite, and Azurite. Turquoise is the national stone of Turkey, Iran and the US states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada.

Real Turquoise

Turquoise is such a popular stone that not all stones sold as Turquoise are the real thing. Sometimes these impostors are easy to spot, but often not. In addition, there are fake turquoise crystals  for sale under all kinds of creative trade names, which are not real turquoise. American and Mexican Turquoises are real, but they are not naturally bright in color. Color is obtained by processing the stone, by painting or tinting it. California Turquoise is actually Variscite and Vienna Turquoise is actually clay that has been dyed. In addition, you can often wrongly buy Magnesite and Howlite as Turquoise stone. They are actually white, porous minerals that are dyed. The turquoise-dyed Howlite is also called Turquenite, meaning turquoise is sometimes hard to tell from impostors!
