What is the mouth harp?
The murchunga is a mouth harp, also called a jaw harp.
The mouth harp is considered one of the oldest instruments in the world. It originated in Asia but its use has spread throughout the world. Made in Nepal, this mouth harp consists of a flexible metal tongue attached to the frame. To play the instrument, the frame is held against the teeth and the metal tongue is played with the finger to produce a tone.
The murchunga is a one-tone instrument, but the player can create the most beautiful melodies and overtones by changing the shape of their mouth and the air flow. When the musician vibrates their tongue, an enchanting sound similar to the buzzing of a swarm of bees is heard.
