Driftwood (Driftwood) – Bali
Bali is an island of Indonesia and has more than 3 million inhabitants. Dance and music are very important in daily life, but the Balinese are also very spiritual. Over the years, Bali continues to develop and the economy is also moving in the right direction.
Artisan
The driftwood articles are manufactured by a small-scale family business. Putu and Koman founded this company as a couple. Together they have three children. Putu and Koman’s family business employs about 15 people.
How is it Made?
The products are made from already felled teak trees. All kinds of products are made from the root stumps. The stumps are dug up and cleaned. For the glass part they use recycled glass. The pieces of glass are heated in a furnace, causing it to melt. The mouth-blown glass is placed on the stumps while it is still hot and soft. Then they blow the glass into the correct shape and it takes the shape of the stump. As a final step, the top is cut open and polished.
Fairtrade
The teak trees have already been felled, by making nice products from the stumps, they try to use the felled tree in its entirety. This prevents teak wood from being lost. This also applies to the glass. Only recycled glass is used. In this way they try to contribute to the environment. Putu and Koman can offer their children a good future through this family business. This also gives employees a stable income and opportunities for the future.
