The Chao Gong is a traditional Chinese percussion instrument with a rich history. This gong, made of electrolytic copper and tin, has a unique construction. It is almost flat, except for the outer edge, which is turned inward to form a kind of cylinder. The surface of the gong is slightly concave, with the edge and the center on both sides covered with a black layer of copper oxide, a byproduct of the production process. The rest of the gong is polished, giving it a striking appearance. The Chao Gong has a special sound, which was used in the past for rituals and tribal meetings. According to tradition, the gong was also used to clear the way for dignitaries and during processions, similar to a siren in modern times. This gong has a diameter of 50 cm and is made of bronze. It is a handmade product, which means that small ‘bubbles’ may appear on the surface. This is a normal phenomenon with handmade gongs. It is not a hole or dent and does not affect the sound quality or lifespan of the gong. A gong mallet is included for free with this gong. It is advisable to also purchase a gong bag for safe storage and transport.
