Singing bowl ‘Saraswati, Protector of the Visual Arts’. An image of Saraswati is engraved on the bottom of the bowl. She is the protector of creativity, visual arts and visual artists. By activating creativity, a feminine energy that dominates the right hemisphere, we bring more balance to life, which is mainly dominated by mental activity. This singing bowl is therefore ideally suited for sessions where ‘balancing’ is important and creativity needs to be stimulated. The mantra of Saraswati is: Om Ah Guru Buddha Saraswati Siddhi Hrim. The singing bowl can of course be used in any other way in which one likes to work. The manufacture of hammered singing bowls is a completely manual process: Each singing bowl is carefully hammered into the right shape, during which various stages are followed to obtain the correct form and a pure tone. In this process, first the different metals (copper, tin, iron, lead, gold and silver) are melted in an oven, depending on what the end product requires (copper and tin = bronze) form the main components, for the bronze bowls, with very small percentages of the other metals for the seven metal bowls. The molten metal is then removed from the furnace and poured into a mould, whereupon discs of different diameters and thicknesses are cut, which can then be further processed. The discs are then manually hammered into the desired shape and size after precise measurement and weight classification. A piece or five discs are first placed on top of each other and heated to red-hot in the oven, after which they are hammered one by one with the aid of a mould in the form of a bowl. The skilled craftsmen can only do this if the metal is red-hot, because if it cools too much it becomes brittle and cracks can occur, making the bowl unusable. After the bowls have their coarse shape, the fine process of finishing begins. At this stage each bowl is given its own shape and size, and again there is a lot of fine hammer work involved, so the bowl has to be red-hot heated again to get exactly the right shape and sound. After this, each of the bowls is sanded and polished from the outside and inside, and possibly with chisels, for the finishing touch. Singing bowl sticks are ordered separately. The diameter is indicative. The trays are manufactured by hand and therefore the diameter can vary.
