Manjushri is the Bodhisattva of wisdom. His task was to help the people out of their ignorance. He gives man the wisdom he can use on their path to Enlightenment. The Enlightenment, the liberation from the cycle of rebirths, is the highest goal in Buddhism. Manjushri is often depicted with a book, a sign for the explanation of the doctrine. Sometimes he makes a gesture with his hands of setting the wheel of the doctrine in motion. This gesture is often made by the Buddhas. Dorje of Vajra is the Sanskrit word for both lightning bolts and diamonds and is considered a ritual or spiritual attribute, mainly in Buddhism but also in Hinduism. In Tibetan, the word village of the same name is often used as a man’s name in Tibet and Bhutan. It also often refers to a small sceptre held in the right hand by Tibetan tantric practitioners during ceremonies, and with which a number of statues of the Buddha are equipped. The Dorje, also known as Vajra, destroys all kinds of ignorance and is itself indestructible. In Tantric rituals he symbolizes the male principle for methodology and compassion, while the corresponding bell in the left hand indicates the female principle and wisdom.
