The Throat Chakra, the 5th Chakra, is a much discussed energy point. How do you recognize a blockage and how do you ensure that the energy can flow properly? You will discover that in this blog!

Chakras play a role in the flow of energy throughout your body. Everyone has at least 7 chakras, all situated along the line of your spine. Each chakra belongs to a specific part of the body, emotions, and a certain part of your personal development. You could compare chakras with flowers that each bloom under the right conditions. A blockage would hinder this growth. But how do you recognize such a blockage and how do you solve it? Read more here!

What is the Throat Chakra?

The Throat Chakra is your channel of self-expression and is therefore logically located around the throat area. This chakra is associated with communication and the expression of emotions. You can think of the words we pronounce and the sounds we make, so obviously your voice is also part of this! According to most chakra experts however, this is just the beginning. Clear communication is so much more than just words! Communication and understanding is just as important in nonverbal interaction. This chakra also plays an important part in honesty and Affirmations, no matter how communication occurs.

Throat Chakra Meaning

You now know what the Throat Chakra stands for. With words, gestures, actions, or even just a look, you can express what you feel and what is going on inside you. It is important to become aware of your thoughts in order to be able to communicate them to others attentively. By expressing yourself lovingly, you will experience that you can heal your own wounds from the past in the here and now. A clear soothing blue is fittingly the Throat Chakra color.

Importance of Opening Throat Chakras

If the energy of this chakra can flow well, it should take little to no effort to put your thoughts and feelings into clear communication. You should not be afraid of the opinion of others. Just speak from your heart and be honest with yourself and with others and you’ll have nothing to worry about. However, an open Throat Chakra does not necessarily mean that it is in balance. For example, if your Throat Chakra is extremely open, you may not be able to listen properly. You could also be too open about some things. With a balanced Vishuddha you know when to be quiet, without shorting yourself. It is not for nothing that the saying: “The quieter you become, the more you’re able to hear” is so loved.

Throat Chakra Blockages

A Throat Chakra blockage can result in negative feelings that are not expressed, such as sadness and anger. The fifth chakra could close through emotional or physical abuse. Addictions could weaken the chakra. Importantly, if there is a Throat Chakra blockage, energy could not flow properly to the top two chakras. This can lead to a feeling of loneliness and the feeling of having lost your higher self. Throat Chakra cleansing is therefore not only important for your relationships with others, but also with yourself.

Recognizing a Blockage in the Throat Chakra

If your Throat Chakra is blocked, you are probably having trouble expressing yourself or standing up for yourself. You may recognize some kind of fear of being misunderstood or of hurting someone else that is holding you back. Because of this, you prefer to keep your feelings to yourself and you are not open with yourself and the people around you. Furthermore, this chakra is said to be connected to the neck, throat, mouth, shoulders, ears, and thyroid. Inexplicably painful shoulders or a stiff neck could indicate an imbalance. Sore throat, hoarseness, inflammation of the larynx and vocal cords, earache, dental problems, and thyroid problems could also be related to fifth Chakra blockages.

The Influence of Your Childhood on the Fifth Chakra

Perhaps you learned as a child to keep your mouth shut, so that you kept quiet when you wanted to vent. This has caused you to remain silent in these moments, as you have not learned to express yourself. Or you think it’s best to shut up for fear of making someone sad or angry. But in order for your Throat Chakra to bloom like a beautiful flower, it is necessary to express yourself openly and lovingly and to be honest about your feelings and needs. Don’t throw up walls, let your needs be known!

Throat Chakra and Sadness

By now you know that suppressing emotions is one of the symptoms of a blocked Vishudda. Of course you are not the only one who finds it difficult to accept or properly express certain emotions such as jealousy, fear, sadness, and anger. But the feeling that you are not allowed to share your emotions or a persistent fear of being yourself could indicate a blockage. Repressed emotions would then turn into a ‘lump in the throat’, with which the Throat Chakra actually gives you a physical signal that it is time to express your emotions.

Clearing Throat Chakra Blockage or Throat Chakra Release

Don’t think of chakra blockages too literally. They are not  physical blockages that can be solved in three seconds and it is not like unclogging a toilet. The problems you experience with poorly flowing energy do not literally come from your throat, but it is the point that you can best focus on during meditations and exercises. There are various ways to remedy a blockage in the Throat Chakra, or to strengthen the Throat Chakra. Whatever method or 5th Chakra exercises you use: it is important that you do this with full attention and pure intention. For example, meditation with a Throat Chakra stone could help to focus your attention in the right way.

Throat Chakra Gemstones

Gemstones are great tools to use for problems with the chakras. A Throat Chakra stone is (light) blue in color, because this color belongs to this energy point. Amazonite would be the preeminent gemstone for throat chakra blockages. This is because this stone has a greenish blue color in addition to a blue color. This means that he would work on both the Vishuddha and the Anahata (Heart Chakra). Connecting the two together could help you to express your feelings. Try drinking some Amazonite Gemstone Water for example. Other examples of gemstones for Throat Chakras are:

You can meditate with one of these stones by holding it in your hand or placing it on the site of the Throat Chakra. You could also try sleeping with the stone or carrying it with you. A loose stone in the pocket or in your bra would work, but a gemstone pendant is even nicer, because the stone is then as close as possible to the chakra.

Throat Chakra Exercises and Tips

Cleansing your Throat Chakra can be done in several ways. For example, you can do special Throat Chakra exercises or use other tools, such as a Throat Chakra gemstone or essential oil. You can also combine methods with each other. Here are some tips and exercises for the fifth chakra:

  • Singing: Sing along to your favorite songs and get in touch with your own voice that way
  • Hum: Sounds could be healing in themselves. Humming the sound hammmm would open the throat chakra
  • Wear a blue scarf or pendant
  • Eat blueberries or drink 5th Chakra teas and Gemstone Water
  • Slowly turn your neck from side to side and front to back every day
  • Lie on your back, lift your head up and look at your feet

Throat Chakra Meditation

There are many guided meditations that focus on balancing the fifth chakra. This often focuses on the color blue, such as visualizing a blue light.  A popular manner of Throat Chakra is with making the ‘hammm’ sound or using Singing Bowls.

Throat Chakra Essential Oil

Essential oils can also help to heal the Throat Chakra. Scents such as eucalyptus, chamomile, juniper, marjoram, myrrh, pine, and rose are suitable for this. At Spiru you can shop a special Vishuddha oil. For example, you can drop a few drops on the site of the chakra and smear it, or use an aroma diffuser.

Throat Chakra Yoga Exercises

Movement reconnects you with your body and with your feelings. This is why yoga is a very helpful tool in caring for your chakras. A simple sun salutation every day could do all chakras good and is therefore also one of the 5th chakra yoga exercises. This exercise gives everyone the opportunity to move with the natural flow of the vinyasa and play with both inner and outer energy.
