Spiritual words of wisdom are sacred or insightful spells used to draw spiritual strength and inspiration. In this blog we’ll introduce you to some Eastern wisdom from Buddhism and Hinduism about love, friendship, happiness, fear, and death!

Famous Buddhist Wisdom & Buddha Proverbs

According to the stories, Buddha dispensed wisdom or lessons to his disciples directly. These were later recorded in the Tripitaka or earliest Buddhist scriptures. What is unique about these philosophies about life and suffering, is that you understand them only when you apply them. According to Gautama Buddha, research into your own reactions, beliefs, and values was the most important part of spiritual growth! That is why many people still work with the texts from the Tripitaka and Buddhist wisdom is now popular all over the world. Here you will find the most beautiful and best-known spiritual wisdom from Buddhism about:

  • Love
  • Friendship
  • Luck
  • Fear
  • Death

Buddhist Wisdom on Love

Love, according to Buddhists, has a lot to do with taming desires and seeking purity within yourself. If you can be selflessly there for yourself, your heart would remain free from (evil) intentions. According to Dhammapada 165 & 166, this is the first step to cordial contact with others:

purity and impurity are your own
no man can cleanse another

do not neglect your well-being
for that of others
even if there are more of them

on the other hand, be aware of your own health
and focus on your own prosperity

In other words, you have to look for spiritual wisdom about love within yourself!

Buddhist Wisdom on Friendship

For Buddhists, friendship is more than the relationship with another human being, namely it’s an attitude with which you approach others (and yourself). According to this philosophy, the aim is to show kindness to every living being and especially those you don’t feel comfortable with. The famous Metta Meditation or Sutra of Loving Kindness speaks of this compassion for everything and everyone:

like a mother’s only child
protects with her life
thus one serves all beings
to grow a boundless heart

Precisely because it is such a challenge not to harbor bad thoughts or feelings, Buddhists practice this Metta Meditation regularly!

Buddhist Wisdom on Happiness

Spiritual wisdom about happiness in Buddhism is mainly about detachment. Because by not attaching yourself to people, possessions, or circumstances, you could come close to joy or enlightenment. In verse 204 of the Dhammapada it says:

health is the best possession
contentment the greatest wealth
trust is the best family
nirvana your greatest happiness

So happiness is not about the world around you, it’s about the world within your spirit!

Buddhist Wisdom on Fear

Fear, according to the Buddha, is the result of attachment, so whoever does not cling to outcomes has nothing to fear according to Dhammapada 39:

a mind free from desire,
and who is not depressed,
from both good and evil deeds,
does not have to be alert and therefore not anxious

Let go of goals and ambitions and you let go of fear.

Buddhist Wisdom About Death

Dying is a natural thing, and for Buddhists it’s nothing to worry about. According to Buddha, it is more useful to understand the workings of life, so that you are not born again and move onto nirvana! According to him, the Buddhist teaching or Dhamma is the only thing that has eternal value, because it is above the fear of impermanence. In Dhammapada 151 it therefore says:

royal carriages eventually fall into disrepair
and this body also grows old
but the Dhamma for the good does not age

Even when your earthly vehicle wears out, your soul on the inside doesn’t change.

Inspirational Hindu Wisdom

Hindus draw their inspiration from various sacred texts, including the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita. Below you will find the most memorable lines from these classic texts, about:

  • A healthy mind
  • Your own path
  • Death

Spiritual Proverbs and Wisdom about a Healthy Mind

The sacred texts of Hinduism repeatedly emphasize that humans differ from other animals because they can use their minds. In fact, if the mind is not properly cared for and developed through meditation and study, for example, you could just become an animal again in the next life (and just in case, vegetarianism is not a bad idea) In chapter 17, verse 3 of the Bhagavad Gita carries this warning:

all people carry beliefs and the content of those beliefs, that is who they are

So you actually become what you think. These thoughts and intentions are therefore important for Your Karma. Learning to direct your mind is also not as easy as it might sound, as stated in chapter 6 verse 6:

those who have conquered their spirit regard him as a friend
those who failed to do so experience him as an enemy

Becoming master of your mind is therefore a sign of great human strength!

Wisdom about Your Path

The Bhagavad Gita also advises many Hindus on the right path to follow. After all, people would be best occupied with a life that corresponds to their character or Ayurvedic blueprint and their social usefulness. In chapter 18, verse 47 of the Bhagavad Gita, therefore, there is this advice:

it is better to do your own tasks even if they are not perfect than to try to complete someone else’s even if you do them flawlessly.

You can only learn something from the tasks or dharma for which you were ‘made’. It’s less about being perfect, then following your purpose. Very clear actually!

Spiritual Wisdom About Death

Death for Hindus is a moment of transition from one life to another, or – if you are lucky – nirvana. Many people also use the quote from chapter 2:22 of the Bhagavad Gita as a reminder that change is inevitable in life:

as a person throws away worn-out garments and puts on new ones, so also in death the soul casts off its worn-out body to enter a new one.

the soul does not die when the body does, it’s just like Buddhism’s worn out carriage metaphor. So there is always hope!
