Hammered singing bowls
Manufacturing of hammered singing bowls is a completely manual process that requires at least 3 people! Each singing bowl is carefully hammered into the right shape, in several stages to obtain the right form and a pure tone. In this process, the various metals (copper, tin, iron, lead, gold and silver) are first melted in a furnace. The ratio varies depending on what the final product requires. Copper and tin, which together produce bronze, make up the main ingredients for the bronze bowls. The copper and tin alloy is also the base of the Seven Metal Bowl, with very small percentages of the other metals. The metal is removed from the furnace once completely molten and poured into a mold. Once cooled, disks are cut from it of various diameters and thicknesses, which can then be further processed. After precise measurement and classification by weight, the discs are then hammered by hand into the desired shape and size.
About five discs are first laid on top of each other and heated in the oven until they are red-hot, after which they are hammered one by one into individual bowl shapes using a mold. The expert craftsmen can only do this when the metal is red-hot, because if it cools too much it becomes brittle and can develop cracks, rendering the bowl unusable. After the bowls have their rough shape, the fine process of finishing begins. At this stage, each bowl gets its own shape and size, and once again a lot of fine hammering is involved. To prevent damaging the bowl, it must be heated red-hot yet again in order to hammer it into exactly the right shape and sound. Once the hammering process is completed, the bowls are individually sanded and polished on the outside and inside, and if necessary chiseled for the finishing touch.
