A damaru is traditionally used during Hindu and Buddhist pujas and other ceremonies. Played slowly and methodically, the damaru’s drum accompanies the enchanting melodies and chants of the Chöd ritual, accompanying the inner meditations and visualizations that are at the heart of this spiritual practice. Usually, the larger Chod drum is used for this practice, but a damaru can also be used.
Symbolism of the damaru
The sound of the damaru is seen as a symbol of emptiness or shunyata. The two joined parts of the drum symbolize relative and ultimate Bodhicitta. The shape of the damaru has its origins in ancient India – where one side of the drum is seen as representing the male energy and the other the female creative energy.
In Tantric Buddhist rituals, the damaru instructs and reminds us of impermanence, while the sound invokes the female goddesses (Dakinis). Another interpretation of the damaru’s sound suggests that the drum represents the power of the rhythm of the heartbeat.
In Hinduism, especially by Shiva devotees, the drum of the Damaru is believed to have produced the very first sound (nada) on earth by Shiva. This first sound was created from the void of nothingness. Shiva began his creation dance to the rhythm of the Damaru. From his dance, the entire world then came into being.
