The Medicine Buddha (in Sanskrit: Bhaisajyaguru) represents the healing aspect of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. His visualization color is blue like lapis lazuli. In his right hand he holds a branch of the myrobalan plant, in his left hand a bowl filled with medicinal nectar.

The Medicine Buddha represents removal of the three “poisons”: attachment, anger, and ignorance. These negative states of consciousness lead to disturbances in the wind, bile and mucus energies in the body, which can cause mental and physical symptoms and ultimately possibly even disease. Meditating on the Medicine Buddha (through mantra recitation and visualization) balances the inner energies, which has a positive effect on the body and mind.
