Saint Anthony of Padua (†1231) was a Franciscan preacher and theologian. He is one of the most popular saints. In the popular devotion he is often invoked as the pattern of lost business. Antonius was born at the end of the 12th century as Fernando Martin de Bulhom in Lisbon, Portugal. As a fifteen-year-old boy he joined the Regular Canons of St Augustine. Shortly after his priestly ordination, he made the transition to a new, fast-growing order: that of the less brothers, begging monks of Francis of Assisi.
