The true sage (Salvia officinalis) is a perennial plant belonging to the lipflower family (Labiatae or Lamiaceae). The plant is mainly used as a herb and is particularly known from Mediterranean cuisine. Sage is known for its believed medicinal effects. It may have an antiseptic effect and is used in traditional medicine against inflammations of the mucous membranes in particular.
