Garnet

You can buy Garnet stones in all kinds of colors: red, orange, pink, green, brown and even black and colorless or white. Blue is the only color that is almost non-existent. Red Garnet Stone is the most common and most commonly used in garnet jewelry. When people talk about the Garnet, they almost always refer to the red variant. It owes its color to the presence of iron and manganese.

What is Garnet?

Garnet gemstones are some of the hardest. They are formed deep in the earth, in the inner mantle and at the transition to the outer mantle.

Two Different Red Garnet Gemstones

The most popular red Garnet stones are the Almandine and the Pyroop. These two are difficult to distinguish from each other. Almandine is brown-red in color, while Pyrope is more pink-red. Pyrope is also harder in structure, because it originates deeper in the earth than Almandine. Red Garnet is often a mix of these two variants. A perfect mix is called Rhodolite.

Garnet Meaning

The name of the stone comes from the Latin word granatus, which means “with seed”. That word is again derived from granum, which means ‘grain’ or ‘seed’. The German philosopher Albertus Magnus named the stone that way because the red, round, rough Garnet crystals resemble pomegranate seeds.

Meaning Name Almandine and Pyrope

The name Almandien or Almandiet, is derived from Alabanda. This is a region in Asia Minor where this mineral has been found for centuries. Popularly, Almandine is often referred to as Carbuncle Stone, which is derived from the Latin word carbunculus (‘little coal’). Pyrope comes from the Latin word pyropus (“fire-colored”).

Meaning Name Rhodolite

The mixture of both types of Almandine and Pyrope is called Rhodolite. This name is a combination of the two Greek words rhodos (“pink”) and lithos (“stone”).

History of the Red Garnet

The Garnet has long been a sought-after gemstone, especially red Garnet colors. Pyrope and Almandien are the best known of all Garnet types. These types are often incorporated into crowns and other symbols of power. In ancient times, Almandine was widely found in Asia Minor. This was also the most popular variety, as it was the color of dove blood. The oldest known jewelry with Garnet comes from Ancient Egypt and is 3500 years old. The Egyptians saw the red stone as the blood of Isis, the goddess of fertility, life, and death. The stone was also seen as a powerful amulet against the Evil Eye.

The Ancient Greeks used the gemstone in pins for cloaks and laurel wreaths. They believed that it would help to rekindle love when their loved one returned after not seeing each other for a long time.

In the Middle Ages, the Carbuncle stone was seen as the stone that brings knowledge, light, and hope in lesser times. It would symbolize life: A person is like a rough garnet, which, after grinding and polishing, starts to sparkle. The medieval knights incorporated Garnet into their clothing, swords and shields. They thought that this would protect them from injury and speed up wound healing. Garnet is also said to enhance the survival instinct. After difficult times, such as the First and Second World War, the stone was often used in jewelry and clothing.

Size of the Gemstone Garnet

The gemstone is available in various sizes. They can be tiny, but they can also be found in enormous sizes. They are often harder than the rock around them, so they will be released with weathering. You can also often find the stone in clay and sand, because they can be washed away from the surrounding sediment by rivers.

Garnet in the Netherlands

The stone in the Netherlands is usually not noticeable. In the Netherlands, the sand on beaches often contains small garnets. Due to the alternation of tides in combination with wind, you sometimes find accumulations of Garnet. At Bergen (North Holland) the sand sometimes turns dark red locally, because the concentration of garnet in the sand is so high. The tiny garnet crystals are clearly visible under a microscope.

Garnet Jewelry

You can often buy gem quality Garnet stones in jewelry. Most garnets that are not suitable for use in jewelry are processed into abrasive powder. At Spiru you will find various types of jewelry with this beautiful gemstone. We have bracelets, pendants, necklaces and even beads to make your own jewelry.

Garnet as Imitation Diamond

The colorless Garnet is sometimes mistaken for Diamond. This variant is therefore often used as an imitation diamond. People also often mistake Almandine for Ruby.

Gemstone Red Garnet Effect

In gemstone therapy, the red garnet is widely used because it is said to improve circulation and blood composition. It is also said to relieve fatigue and exhaustion. According to experts, Red Garnet is the ideal stone in situations where life seems hopeless. Since the Middle Ages, the Carbuncle stone has been seen as the stone that brings knowledge, light, and hope in lesser times. The stone could give strength, energy, perseverance, endurance, self-confidence, willpower, and vitality. For many, it symbolizes hope, courage, optimism, joie de vivre, decisiveness, and the urge to survive. Blockages, resistances, and limiting patterns and addictions could be reduced. It could also help awaken the Kundalini energy.

Working of the Stone on a Physical Level

Physically, the stone could promote the body’s self-healing ability, strengthen the immune system and promote the absorption of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. According to the gemstone theory, the stone also has a positive influence on the blood and circulation, cold hands and feet, the heart, the lungs, and sexuality. It could increase potency and libido. Connoisseurs believe that the stone can support recovery from a burnout. It’s therefore with good reason that the stone is also called the stone for perseverance, courage, and fighting spirit. People who are pale or lifeless would get a lot of hope and motivation from this red gemstone. This activating stone would be less suitable for overactive people or people with high blood pressure.
