Karma is a term we’ve all probably used at one time or another. But what exactly is Karma? Even more important, does Karma exist? Well, simply put, karma means what goes around comes around, and I think we all know from experience that is true! Everything you do comes back to yourself. Yet it is not as simple as good and bad deeds producing good or bad karma, meaning one good deed done selfishly won’t get you anywhere. But on the other hand, it is nice to know that it is entirely up to you whether the energy you get back is positive or negative. Read in this blog about Karma, what it means, and how you can create good Karma!

What Does Karma Mean?

The meaning of Karma is most commonly described as ‘action’ or ‘deed’. This literal translation comes from Sanskrit, which is a common language in the sacred scripts of Hinduism and Buddhism. This translation does not complete the idea of karma. Do you see what’s missing?

Meaning Karma and Vipaka: Action and Reaction

Basically the term Karma only refers to the actions of a person. These can be actions, but also thoughts or statements. The reaction is called Vipaka and represents the consequences of that action. For example, when you give someone a compliment – action – that person may smile – consequence. The two are just like the Chinese sign Yin Yang, meaning karma only exists together with vipaka.

The Law of Karma Has Exceptions

The law of cause and effect is also called Kamma and actually stands for that inseparable combination of Karma and Vipaka. The principle is simple; everything that comes from an intentional action has a reaction. But to go a step further, if the action is positive, it would also have a positive effect and a cruel action creates negative energy. However, this doesn’t just mean what happens immediately, actions and the energy they produce set up a ripple effect. It’s like standing in a pond and throwing a pebble. You first see a splash and then rings of ripples effect the water around it. The ripples will eventually reach you too!

Is there an exception to the rule? Well, according to Kamma, everything we do, think, and speak has a purpose, but your intention is the key. If you offend someone, but this was not your intention, it won’t hurt your Karma. On the other hand, if you are nice to someone just because you need something, that is selfish and will produce bad Karma. It’s similar to Tibetan Prayer Flags; they only bring you good fortune if you hang them with good intentions. Think of it this way, “Karma is a bitch” only applies to bad intentions.

Karma Examples – Good Intentions

The idea of Karma can be quite intimidating when you consider that all your actions can have consequences. But it’s in your own hands. If your intentions are good, then you don’t have to worry! On the other hand, everyone has a bad day every now and then. At times like this, when you’re not feeling your best, you may not be so kind to yourself or to someone else. Fortunately, there are several ways you can balance your karma, even if you’ve had a bad day. In general, focus on the positive and everything will be ok! Five ways to master this are:

  • Sincerely regret bad intentions and prevent the same from happening again.
  • Take care of yourself so that you can take good care of others.
  • Be kind and respectful.
  • Help where you can. A small gesture can have a big impact.
  • Find peace within yourself through Meditation, reciting Mantras or making Mandalas.

There are many other options for building good karma. This is just a beginning. Think of it this way, be good to others and to yourself and you should be on your way to good karma.

Buddhism Karma: Did Buddha Create This Law?

In Buddhism there is no deity who rewards or punishes. Buddha did not invent the law of Karma any more than Newton invented gravity. Buddha did describe the process of cause and effect that takes place within consciousness. With this he showed how we can best act within the law of cause and effect to achieve peace, happiness, and avoid problems.

 Is Karma Spiritual?

Karma has nothing to do with a written destiny. According to the law of Karma you’re responsible for both pleasant and unpleasant experiences. It is a natural universal law that arises from your own actions and creates an opportunity to grow spiritually. You make your Karma and it changes as you learn and grow as a person. Some people believe that not everything that happens to you has to do with Karma, but rather specific experiences may give you the opportunity to grow on a spiritual level.

Imagine: a drug-addicted man causes a car accident that nearly kills him. He sees his near-death experience as a second chance. He experiences spiritual awakening and decides to devote the rest of his life to helping recovering drug addicts. His accident wasn’t a product of good intention, so turning his life around wasn’t good Karma. However, it did create an opportunity for spiritual growth and by taking responsibility for his bad actions, he began to improve his karma and his life.

Karma, Astrology, and Lunar Nodes

Karma is a principle of reincarnation as well. Astrology could help you understand past lives. This involves looking at the ‘karma point’ or ‘north moon’s node’. This point indicates which direction you need to go in this life. The south node would indicate where you come from. These two are always diametrically opposed. If you have your southern node in Aries, your northern node is in Libra. For example, if you have this karma point, you should learn to count to ten before making a decision because you may have a fiery Aries temper. Instead you should carefully balance your decisions like the patient Libra.
