Making massage oil yourself is not only very easy, but also fun to do. All you need is a bottle, dropper, base oil of your choice, and essential oil or herbs of your choice. Curious about making your own massage oil? You can read all about it in this blog.

Make Your Own Massage Oil

Creating natural massage oil that is perfect for yourself is not difficult at all. If you want to make massage oil, you start with a base oil of your choice. Choose a vegetable, neutral oil that is not too greasy. Your favorite essential oil will dissolve well into that. The oil ensures that your baby’s skin remains nice and supple, and it also protects your skin against drying out. A good preparation method is important, because an excessive amount of essential oil that comes on the skin unmixed can damage your skin.

 Base Oils You Can Use

Now, what do you need to make your homemade massage oil. You can’t just pick a base oil and add drops of essential oil to it. Good relationships are important! You can choose different oils as base oil. For example, think of:

  • almond oil
  • rice oil
  • corn oil
  • jojoba oil
  • avocado oil
  • peach kernel oil
  • apricot kernel oil
  • sunflower oil

One thing that is very important is that the smell of the oil itself is not too strong. Making massage oil with olive oil will lubricate the skin nicely, but olive oil itself has a strong smell that can mask the scent of the added essential oils and herbs. You can also mix a cheap base oil – sunflower oil, for example, lubricates well and is cheap – with a more expensive avocado oil, jojoba oil, or nut oil. The same applies to making massage oil with coconut oil. Smell if you like the scent!

Massage Oil with Essential Oil

Then perhaps the best part of making massage oil with essential oil, namely: choosing your favorite essential oils. Before you get started with this, it is just as important to mention that you cannot apply essential oils to the skin undiluted. There are, however, a number of exceptions. You can wear jasmine, sandalwood, patchouli and rose as perfumes directly on your skin. In addition, be careful with oils that are phototoxic. That means these oils could discolor your skin when exposed to the sun. This could be the case, for example, with oil of bergamot, lavender, and lime.

Ratios in Your Massage Oil Recipe

If you are going to brew your own mixture, it is important that you use the correct proportions. After all, you want to smell something, but it shouldn’t be too dominant either. A ratio of 2% essential oil is average. The larger the bottle, the less (in proportion) essential oil you need. So if you are making a larger batch, stick to 1% essential oil. If you are more economical in your use, 3% is sufficient. To clarify, you can use the following proportions for 1%, 2% and 3% essential oil:

  • Base oil 50 ml.: 10 drops; 20 drops; 30 drops
  • Base oil 100 ml.: 20 drops; 40 drops; 60 drops
  • Base oil 200 ml.: 40 drops; 80 drops; 120 drops
  • Base oil 500 ml.: 100 drops; 200 drops; 300 drops

Of course you can also mix different oils for a unique scent.

How to Do It

  • Place the base oil, bottle and essential oils at room temperature.
  • Make sure the bottle is clean and sterile!
  • Put the essential oil in the bottle with a dropper.
  • Then add the base oil.
  • Put the bottle in the fridge.

The oil remains ‘nice’ if it is at a temperature of 3-6 degrees Celsius. If the temperature drops below 3 degrees, then there is a chance that the oil will curdle which would be a shame! Then put the oil in the sunlight for 24 hours before you start using it. Lubricate! Have you become enthusiastic about making your own Ayurvedic massage oil? A bottle of oil is good for about one year.

Make your Own Massage Oil with Herbs

You could also make a massage oil with your favorite herbs. Choose your herbs for their scent or calming effect. Then fill a glass jar or bottle with your chosen herbs, and top it off with your chosen base oil. Close the jar or bottle tightly and then place it in a sunny spot for two weeks. Shake the bottle every day or turn it upside down for optimal results! After the two weeks, strain well and squeeze. It is best to store your oil in a dark place.

You are of course free to create your own massage oil. But for your convenience, we have already listed some delicious scents and herbal combinations and the possible effects for you.
