Do you like looking for old objects and gems or are you sensitive to vibes and radiation? Using a dowsing rod might just be for you. According to experts, these special wooden or metal sticks are great at absorbing different types of energy. Here you can read what dowsing entails and what you can use it for!

What is Dowsing?

According to users, dowsing rods can detect energy in the earth that is produced by hidden water sources, ore, and gems. They also come in handy for finding bricked-in pipes, ducts and wiring in the house. The rod would also react to the earth’s rays and other forces that, according to many people, disrupt the flow of energy. Because many spiritual movements believe that earth energy and spiritual energy are linked, spiritual dowsing is a way of using these energies to gain spiritual and personal insights. Think of it this way: just like a compass uses the earth’s magnetic fields to help you find your physical way, dowsing rods use other energy fields from the earth to help you find your spiritual way.

How do Dowsing Rods Work?

Dowsing has been researched quite a lot, as it has been popular since the Middle Ages. Scientists now explain how it works through the ideomotor effect, which is the idea that expectations can lead to small muscle movements. The rod would therefore not react to the environment, but rather to its owner. It is also not surprising that people who go water dowsing, also known as witching for water, often really find water sources, because there is  underground water all over the earth. It has been tested whether successful dowsers are more sensitive to electromagnetic fields and that indeed appears to be the case. Ask the practitioners themselves and they’ll tell you that they really experience the influences of these energetic and magnetic fields while dowsing!

History of Dowsing

Dowsing first became popular in Europe in the thirteenth century. Nearly all important matters were left to the sticks, from assigning guilt in court to passing on divine messages. Once some mystics began using dowsing to predict the future, the dowsing rod became associated with the devil. Even though many priests also used dowsing and it was a common practice for finding resources, it nevertheless gained a bit of a dark reputation due to its association with fortune tellers.

In the fifteenth century, dowsing to find ore first became popular among miners in Germany. Later, these miners took their dowsing rods to England. The English mainly wanted to use dowsing rods for finding water. In the centuries that followed, people mostly used these mysterious compasses for finding precious resources, including gold. Of course some people still do this, after all, who wouldn’t want to find treasures?

Types of Dowsing Rods – Models and Materials

Rods come in different models, of which the Y and L shapes are the best known. In the past they were made from branches. But are you looking for modern dowsing rods? These are usually made of copper, plastic, or processed wood.

Characteristics of a Y-shaped

A Y-shaped branch is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a dowsing rod. Made from a split between two branches, this wishbone shaped tool is the classic rod that you know from childhood stories. According to experts, this shape would be very useful if you want to track down a specific point, for example a lost object or gem. If you’re unsure about how to hold dowsing rods, then a Y- shaped rod is an easy way to start. You simply hold it by the two short ends so that the foot of the Y points forward.

Working with an L-shaped

Two L-shaped bars, one for each hand, is another popular variation. You hold these rods by their short end like a handle so that the long side is horizontally pointing forward. While dowsing, they should start to move from side to side and may even cross each other. With these you could search for secret locations, but this type is also often used for indicating in which direction something is located. For example, do you want to know where your hidden pipes lead? Then use these sticks.

Similar Divining Tools

In addition to the dowsing rod, there are more instruments with which you can detect invisible energies. You may be familiar with the Biotensor, a type of iron antenna that users believe shows vibrational frequencies. Therapists who work with these instruments use the vibrations to measure whether or not you are comfortable in your own skin. They believe that because each organ has its own radiation value, for example you can find out exactly where energy blockages are located in the body. The pendulum is also a popular tool and is also similar to the dowsing rod in operation. You could ask a pendulum questions about yourself, as well as use them to find keys, so very handy!

How to Dowse for Yourself

Do you want to try dowsing yourself? Do divining rods work? According to practitioners, that mainly depends on how sharp your intuition is. However, there are different opinions, while some believe dowsing rods only focus the intuition and sensitivity of the user, others believe that the sticks really pick up energy fields themselves. It would be nice to try it out for yourself, and see what you think! There are plenty of courses where you can learn to dowse. Maybe you’re already familiar with Pendulums, then you’ll probably notice some similarities. Just like pendulums, you also have to tune rods so that they give clear signs. You can read more about this in our Beginners Guide to Pendulum Dowsing.  In addition, while dowsing  with either a rod or a pendulum, you should visualize very well what you are looking for. That helps to tune into the hidden treasure!

Disruption Detected? How to Restore Harmony

When practicing spiritual dowsing, you are looking for energy blockages within or around a person. Has the dowser indicated an energetic disturbance? Then of course you want to do something about it. Fortunately, there are all kinds of methods with which you can restore the balance in your home. Practitioners of energy work try to convert negative energy into positive energy. For example, think of Feng Shui Tips such as adding enough light, air, heat and natural materials. People also place a Golden Triangle of Gemstones or Orgonite on the obstructed spot or Cleanse the House with Sage.
