Aromatherapy is increasingly common, but what exactly is it? You will discover that soon enough in this blog!

Aromatherapy? Those are the nice smells, right? Yes, but it goes beyond that. Essential oils have been used for centuries. You come into contact with them regularly, often without even realizing it. They are everywhere, from secret ingredients in your cosmetics, to flavors and spices in your daily meals. But what exactly is aromatherapy? And what is the effect of all those special fragrances? In this aromatherapy blog we’ll tell you everything you need to know!

What is Aromatherapy?

To get straight to the point: aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to improve physical and emotional health. Despite the fact that the term ‘aromatherapy’ has not been around for very long, oil therapy existed since ancient times! The organic essential oil is obtained by means of distillation of plants (parts). Aromatherapy oil is extracted from flowers, such as lavender, as well as from fruits, bark, resin, leaves, or seeds. People discovered early on that the biochemical molecules of the extracted oil would have a medicinal effect on our body. Essential oils help to restore balance to the body!

Aromatherapy Meaning

As you may have discovered for yourself, aromatherapy is a compound of the two words ‘aroma’ and ‘therapy’. It therefore stands for the use of scents for a treatment. Each oil has its own specific properties, which are said to be conducive to certain ailments, feelings, or physical discomfort.

Aromatherapy Lemongrass

Lemongrass is a commonly used and powerful scent in aromatherapy. The scent is  spicy, refreshing, lemony, with an earthy undertone. It is often found in cleaning products, soaps, and cosmetics, as well as as a flavoring agent in food. The spicy, fresh aroma would make this oil a real pick-me-up. Lemongrass could give strength and optimism to listlessness or fight feelings of wekness. It could also help to get new ideas and insights, have a cooling effect and quickly lower a fever.

Working with Aromatherapy

In addition to their fine aroma, essential oils are also famous for their therapeutic effect on the body. For example, one oil could provide a boost, while the other ensures that you sleep like a baby all night. Do you want to start with aromatherapy? Then it might be wise to find out why you want this. Do you want a wonderful scent in your home? Then you can start with one or two oils and one of our aroma burners or our Basic Starter Set, in which you will find the most common oils. For example, you can discover what the smell in the house does to your mood. Do you want to use aromatherapy for skin products or a massage? Then you can purchase a neutral, natural oil and add a few drops of a relaxing essential oil to it.

Aromatherapy – Colds and Flu

Once in a while it’s that time again: that annoying cough comes up, your nose starts running and the flu season is just around the corner. Aromatherapy can also be a solution then! You can make a steam bath and add a few drops of essential oil, or fill your bath with warm water and refreshing oil. In case of a cold it is best to choose in our aromatherapy webshop:

  • peppermint oil
  • thyme oil
  • eucalyptus oil
  • pine oil
  • jasmine oil

Peppermint Aromatherapy

It is probably not surprising that many people use peppermint oil to cure their snotty noses. The invigorating scent of this oil is a relief for your respiratory system! Besides a solution for a stuffy nose, this fresh stuff is also good for digestion, stomach, and intestines.

Aromatherapy Sleep

As we wrote before, aromatherapy can help you achieve deep relaxation, which can come in handy before going to sleep! The most commonly used scent to fall asleep is lavender. People have been using the relaxing, calming scent of the lavender plant  for generations for a better night’s sleep. But the scent of chamomile, roses, and sandalwood could also do this job. It is important that you like the smell, otherwise it will be quite, well, difficult to relax.

Learn More About Fragrances

Aromatherapy is a great way to relax and balance your body.  Essential oils aren’t the only way though! For example, incense is one of our oldest fragrant spiritual tools.
