Aleppo Soap History

Originating in the ancient city of Aleppo in northwestern Syria from which it gets its name, Aleppo Soap is the first known solid soap.  Although the exact history has been lost, it is well known that this Soap has been used since antiquity and for thousands of years, soap masters have been hand making this ‘mother of all soaps’ using traditional recipes.

What is Aleppo Soap?

Authentic Aleppo Soap is 100% plant based and contains no chemical additives, dyes, or preservatives. The basis of this natural soap is a mixture of olive and  bay laurel oils, which are used in various ratios to create a variety of soaps. Because the oils are softening and moisturizing, you can use Aleppo Soap daily as a wonderful addition to your natural skin and facial care products!

Aleppo Soap Benefits

Some people swear by this plant based cleanser, but that´s not  surprising!  It has many advantages, including:

  • Plant Based
  • Soft
  • Purifying Effect
  • Multifuntional
  • Reduced Plastic Waste
  • Supporting Families Aleppo
  • Environmentally Friendly

Plant Based

Aleppo Soap ingredients are all natural and plant based, including olive oil, water, bay laurel (bayberry) oil, and lye. This age-old recipe that is still followed today, so you know that it is truly a  product that has stood the test of time!

Soft

Olive and bay laurel oils give the soap its incredible softness. No chemical additives such as perfumes are used, so it is even safe for delicate baby skin and its softness may sooth some skin irritations.

Purifying Effect

Aleppo Soap is a favorite soap among people with skin problems. According to many, its purifying qualities make it nature’s cure-all for delicate skin. Enthusiasts say that they experience better results with Aleppo Soap than with the soaps containing chemical agents that you can buy in the supermarket. A rejuvenating effect is also reported and using the soap on a regular basis is thought to purify pores, making them less likely to clog. As a result, your skin is nourished, supported and radiant.

Multifunctional

Very few soaps can be used as widely as Aleppo Soap! You can use it on the skin, face, teeth, and hair. Even try washing your clothes with it!

Reduced Plastic Waste

Think about your shampoo, detergents, tubes of toothpaste, and cosmetics for a moment. How many plastic containers do you go through with just these products?! Perhaps the biggest advantage of Aleppo Soap is that it contains no micro-plastics, no plastic is used during production,  and very little in packaging. In addition to being sustainable by reducing plastic, each bar of soap also lasts much longer when compared to chemical soaps. So it is also sustainable for your wallet!

Supporting Families in Aleppo

By choosing this multi-purpose cleanser you support the families of a devastated city and others in the region who make a living from soap production. Some of the proceeds go towards medical aid and education in Aleppo.

Environmentally Friendly

Due to its natural plant based composition and the reduction of plastic waste, Aleppo Soap is friendly to your skin and the environment. It’s a win-win situation!

How to Use Aleppo Soap as Shampoo

Thanks to the olive oil, Aleppo Soap is nourishing for hair and cleanses the scalp. You can  rub the whole block over your wet hair, or you can cut it into smaller pieces. Massage the soap into the hair, rinse thoroughly, and you are ready to go! Fans of Aleppo Soap shampoo say they see more volume and less dandruff. For convenience, we also have special Aleppo Soap shampoo and liquid Aleppo Soap.

One Small Downside

Even though Aleppo Soap has many advantages, some people who use it as a shampoo have pointed out a small downside: it takes some getting used to.
If you are used to ‘normal’ shampoo, you may feel like your hair is less clean and less soft after washing it with Aleppo Soap. This is because even though the soap cleans the hair, it produces less lather and contains no perfumes. To help with this, you could use a mix of apple cider vinegar and water as a conditioner to prevent your hair from feeling ‘stiff’, but takes some practice so be patient!

Aleppo Soap as Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth with a large bar of soap isn’t exactly handy, so instead, cut off a small piece and soften it with hot water. Carefully brushing your teeth at least once a day with Aleppo Soap as a toothpaste could stimulate the gums and have antibacterial benefits. The soapy taste takes some getting used to, but it’s worth it when you see the result! After just a few weeks, many people see cleaner, whiter teeth. Many people believe that fluoride toothpaste is needed to clean and protect teeth, but Aleppo Soap is a 100% natural way to clean your teeth and gums instead. It may even have a similar effect to oil pulling, an Ayurvedic dental health method!

Aleppo Soap as Shaving Cream

The combination of the olive oil and bay laurel oil could make a great shaving cream. Instead of drying the skin out, the oils leave the skin moisturized. This soothing hydration makes it suitable for even the most sensitive skin, so lather up and give it a try!

Using Natural Soap as Detergent

Just like Marseille Soap or Green Soap, you can also use Aleppo soap as household cleaner. There are plenty of great use, like try making laundry detergent! Fill a pan with half a liter of water and add 40 grams of Aleppo Soap Flakes. Bring this to a boil and when the flakes have dissolved, add two more liters of water. Let it cool overnight and there you have it: DIY detergent! For white laundry, add 20 grams of baking sod or for a nice scent, you can add a few drops of essential oil when your mixture has cooled down. The softness of the soap keeps your clothes beautiful so give it a try and have fun customizing your detergent. Aleppo Soap removes stains from clothes in an environmentally friendly way!

Aleppo Soap for Face Cleansing

If you’re looking for a refreshing daily face wash, this plant based cleanser is perfect!  In the morning or at night, just before going to sleep, it’s a nice gentle cleansing. The mild soap will clean your face but not dry out the skin. By using Aleppo soap, acne may also be reduced because it deep cleanses your pores, preventing the build up of acne-causing oils.

Soothing Insect Bites

In the case of an insect bite, you can rub the skin with a piece of slightly moistened soap. Depending on the bite, it may soothe the skin and relieve the itching. All people react to insects differently, but this natural solution is worth a try!

How to Store Aleppo Soap

Making sure your soap is stored dry is important, so drain it well and keep it somewhere with a bit of air. Placing the soap on a partially open soap rack, so that air can also reach the bottom of the soap block is a perfect solution. A wooden soap dish is great for this! You’ll find everything you need for organic skincare at Spiru!
